Douglas Garrett

June 21, 1942 — August 28, 2008

Mr. Douglas Lamar Garrett, age 66, of 535 Prospect Road, Rockmart passed away suddenly Thursday, August 28, 2008.


He was born in Cherokee County, GA on June 21, 1942 a son of the late Andrew Garrett and Pearl Gravitt Garrett. Mr. Garrett had lived in the Acworth, GA area before moving to Rockmart where he has made his home for the past 45 years. He was a former employee of Engineered Fabrics retiring in 1990 and had been involved with the former Rockmart Civil Defense. He had also served as Chief of the Aragon Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Garrett was a member of New Freedom Fellowship.


In addition to his parents Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by three brothers: Leon, Hoyt and Howard Garrett and by a grandson, Robert Douglas White.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Patricia Hughes Garrett of Rockmart to whom he was married on September 7, 1962; son, Mr. Andy Garrett and wife Aleta Garrett, Rockmart; daughter, Ms Kelly Garrett, Rockmart; step daughter, Mrs. Vickie Johnson and her husband Michael, Rockmart; brother, Mr. Bobby Garrett, Carrollton; four sisters: Mrs. Becky Winters, Dallas, Mrs. Cenna Prater, Acworth, Mrs. Pauline Walker, Acworth and Mrs. Myrtle Brown, Acworth; brother in law and sister in law, Henry and Elaine Hughes, Rockmart; grandchildren: Nikki Tolbert and husband Brandon, Tifffany Garrett, Ben Jones and Andrew Garrett; step grandchildren: Stormy Burnley and Amber Garrison; great grandchild: Grace Tolbert; step great grandchildren: Caity Garrison, Macenzie and Cambree Garrison, Michaela Johnson and Holly Little.


Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 31st at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Carroll officiating. Interment will follow in the Bellview Baptist Church Cemetery.


Pallbearers will include: Greg Hughes, Mark Hughes, Craig Taylor, Bo Garrison, James Burnley and Michael Harper. Honorary pallbearers will include: Dennis Singleton, Dennis Hulsey, William Sutton, Houston Edwards, Ernest Wisener and Barry Cole.


The family will receive friends Friday and Saturday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
