Elgerie Powers Prater

Mrs. Elgerie Powers Prater, age 87, of Golden Street, Rockmart, passed away Friday, March 18, 2011.


She was born in Cave Spring, GA on April 20, 1923 a daughter of the late Jervis Woods and Jewell Holland Woods. Mrs. Prater had lived the greater part of her life in Rockmart where she was a graduate of Rockmart High School, a former employee of Allens Five and Dime and City Drug Store. Mrs. Prater was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart. She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Worth Powers in 1978, by her second husband, Dennis Prater in 2000, by a son, John D. Powers in 2009 and by two brothers: Gerrond Woods and Bruce Woods.


Survivors include a daughter, Sherrie Brown and her husband Hal of Rockmart; sister, Shirley Lyle, Rockmart; brother, Stanley Woods, LaGrange; daughter in law Genie Powers, Baton Rouge, LA; two grandchildren: Tiffany Hammonds, Rockmart and Worth Powers, Gilbert, AZ; step granddaughter Tory Escola of Lousiana; three great grandchildren: Kain Hammonds, Brandon Hammonds and Griffin Powers;and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.


Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Eddy Hughes officiating.


The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until the memorial hour at the funeral home.


In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to the Rockmart Nursing and Rehab Resident Fund.
