Horace James Shepherd

Mr. Horace James Shepherd, age 89, of 860 College Street, Rockmart passed away Monday, October 13, 2008 at his residence.


He was born in Bartow County, GA on August 2, 1919 a son of the late Lee Shepherd and Laura Cantrell Shepherd. Mr. Shepherd had lived most of his life in Rockmart. He has been a member of the Second Baptist Church since 1964 and served as a Deacon of the Church. Mr. Shepherd was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II in the European Theatre and was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge. He was a former employee of the Goodyear Mill and worked in Atlanta for the John Rogers Company. Mr. Shepherd retired from the maintenance department of Floyd Medical Center, Rome.


He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mrs. Sara Hutcheson Shepherd in 1985; by three sisters: Mrs. Essie Tate, Mrs. Lois Wilbanks and Mrs. Nellie Gentry; and by two brothers: Mr. Glen Shepherd and Mr. Claude Shepherd.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Patsy Ann Shepherd of Rockmart to whom he was married on July 16, 1993; one daughter, Mrs. Tracy Puckett, Lindale; one son, Mr. Robert A. Shepherd, Johnson City, TN; two step daughters: Mrs. Tina Edwards, Rockmart and Mrs. Susan Bailey, LaFayette; one step son, Mr. Ricky Littlejohn, Lafeyette; 4 grandchildren; 7 step grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren and 4 step great grandchildren also survive.


Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 15, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. David Warriner and Rev. John Moates officiating. Interment will follow in Rockmart Memorial Gardens with Brown-Wright Post # 12 of the America Legion in charge of military graveside rites.


Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include Darrell Gallaher, Larry Gore, Bobby Hutcheson and former co worker of the Floyd Medical Center maintenance department.


The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.


The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Horace James Shepherd.
