James (Red) Lanier

Mr. James (Red) Lanier, age 83, of Taylorsville, GA passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness.

He was born in Polk County, GA on April 23, 1930 a son of John Roy Lanier and Lottie Harper Lanier. Mr. Lanier had lived all of his life in Taylorsville where he was a graduate of Taylorsville High School and was a member of the Taylorsville Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served his country during the Korean Conflict and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Mr. Lanier was a member of the John W. Akin Lodge # 537 F. & A.M. for over 60 years. He was well known in the Taylorsville area having worked in numerous vocations including: farming, cotton gin owner/operator and grocery store operator. His last employment was with Woods Fabrication in Taylorsville where he had been employed for the past twenty years. He loved to fish and spend time teaching his grandchildren this pleasure of life. Mr. Lanier had been recognized for his outstanding and dedicated service to the Bartow County Recreation Department.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters: Barbara Smith and Forrest Willis and brothers: William (Buddy) Lanier and John Curtis Lanier, Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Hayes Lanier of Taylorsville to whom he was married on May 26, 1951; daughter, Janet Queen and husband Johnnie, Cartersville; son, Rusty Lanier and wife Lynn, Taylorsville; grandchildren: Ron Gore and wife Amy, Rob Gore and wife Amy, Jennifer Lanier and Jamie Lanier; great grandchildren: Austin Gore and Hallie Gore; brothers: George Lanier, Rockmart and Sidney Lanier, Acworth; sisters: Betty Tatum and Mary Moore both of Cartersville.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Taylorsville Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Harris officiating. A eulogy will be given by Dr. Brad Ward. Interment will follow in the Taylorsville Cemetery with Rob Gore officiating and military graveside rites provided by Brown-Wright Post # 12 of the American Legion.

Mr. Lanier will be taken to the church Friday morning to lie instate from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour.

Grandsons and nephews will serve as active pallbearers and include: Ron Gore, Rob Gore, Jamie Lanier, Austin Gore, Larry Lanier and Mitchell Bagley. Honorary pallbearers will include members of John W. Akin Lodge # 537 F. & A.M. and the employees of Woods Fabrication.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made in Mr. Lanier?s honor to the Taylorsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 19 Church St. Taylorsville, GA 30178.

The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Mr. James (Red) Lanier.
