Mrs. Jenna Lee Cummings, age 81, of Rockmart, GA passed away Sunday, March 2, 2014 at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born in Fairmount, GA on February 22, 1933 a daughter of the late George Hill Wilson and Dora Lee Jones Wilson. Her early years of life were spent in Acworth, Kennesaw, Atlanta and Decatur. She graduated from Decatur Girls High School in 1950 and then attended West Georgia College where she received a two year degree in 1952. While at West Georgia College she met and soon married her husband of over sixty years, William F. (Bill) Cummings. She returned to West Georgia and received her BS in Education in 1963 and her Masters in Education Degree in 1972. Mrs. Cummings began her teaching career in the Aragon School where she taught seventh and eighth English from 1959 to 1971, then at Elm Street Junior High from 1971 to 1974 and finished her teaching career at Eastside Elementary where she taught second grade from 1974 to 1989. She was selected Teacher of the Year for the 1975-1976 school year by the Association of Classroom Teachers of the Georgia Association of Educators. Mrs. Cummings was a member of the National Association of Educators, the Georgia Association of Educators, the Polk Business Womens Association and the Polk County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Cummings and her husband loved to travel and had visited all fifty of the United States, Canada and the Carribean. She had also traveled abroad following her retirement visiting the countries of Greece, Turkey, Wales, China, Italy, Ireland, Russia and Holland.. Mrs. Cummings also had a great love of the arts. She had been a member of the Rockmart Church of Christ since 1957.
Survivors include her husband, Mr. William F. (Bill) Cummings of Rockmart to whom she was married on September 1, 1953; one daughter, Mrs. Julie Moss and her husband, Tommy, Rome; two sons: Mr. David Cummings and his wife Rita, Rockmart and Mr. Tommy Cummings, Rockmart; six grandchildren: Benji Shanks and wife Alexis, Jenna Moss, Thomas Moss, Abby Cummings, April Lanier and husband Brad and Kerri King and husband Chad; five great grandchildren: Oliver Shanks, Briley King, Avery King, Ansley Lanier and Dawson Scoggins; three sisters: Betty Wilcox and husband Jim, Macon, GA, Eloise Dasher and husband Billy, Macon, GA and Hilda Tidwell and husband Coleman, Macon, GA; brother in law, Lee Cummings, Rockmart; sister in law, Joyce Cummings Combs and husband John, Tallapoosa, GA; sister in law, Joan Cummings, formerly of Rockmart; nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services will be held Sunday, March 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home. Visitation will follow the memorial service at the funeral home.
