Joy W. "Jay" Owens, Sr.

Mr. Joy W. "Jay" Owens, Sr., age 80, of Cedartown, GA passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Aragon, GA on May 9, 1935, a son of the late David Owens and the late Tempe Deems Owens. Mr. Owens was a member of Youngs Grove Baptist Church and was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He spent his working career at Lockheed-Martin where he retired after many years of service. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dot Owens; son, Tony Owens; and brothers and sisters: Lois Owens, Darnell Owens, Kelly Owens, Margie O. Holbrooks and Roy Owens.

Survivors include his children: Wendy King and her husband Charlie, Joy Owens, Jr. and his wife Tammy and Melba Larkin; special longtime friend, Brenda Faber; grandchildren: Drew and his wife Erica, Dave, and JoyLeigh Owens, Stephen Larkin and Angel Vines; great grandchildren: Jay Larkin and Evelyn Reece Owens; brothers and sisters: Christine Bishop, Maggie Garner, Wilma Edwards and Wayne Owens; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 16, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Barry McCullough officiating with Jimmy Pritchett and Gwendell Owens delivering the eulogies. Interment will follow in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Brown-Wright Post #12 of the American Legion in charge of military graveside rites.

Pallbearers will include: Rodney Wolfe, Kim Wolfe, Dave Owens, Drew Owens, Jay Larkin and Doyle Thomas. Honorary pallbearers will include: Cecil Lester, Thomas Bell, Shawn Cochran, Jacob Bell, Stephen Larkin, Bryan Owens and Mike Estes.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial donations may be made to the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 750 Prospect Road Rockmart, Georgia 30153 in memory of Mr. Owens.
