(Mark) Marcus Elmer Cantrell

January 8, 1936 — January 1, 2013

(Mark) Marcus Elmer Cantrell went to be with our Heavenly Father January 1, 2013 after a short illness in Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, Arkansas.

He was born January 8, 1936 to the late James Riley Monroe Cantrell and Alma Williams Cantrell. Mark graduated from Taylorsville High School, attended Berry College and graduated from Coosa Valley Tech as a machinist. He was active in our community life where he loved to help the needy. He was a barber, a Boy Scout leader, a farmer, a cattleman, a hunter and a fisherman. He was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army.


Mark was a beloved member of Cornerstone Independent Baptist Church, Taylorsville where he was a Deacon and teacher. He was a Past Master of John W. Akin Lodge # 537 F. & A.M., a Scottish Rite, York Rite and a 32 degree Mason.

Mark retired after 32 years from the Lonestar Cement Plant in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, formerly Marquette Cement where he was a machinist.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia Free Cantrell; a son, David W. and wife Lori B. Cantrell of Dublin, California; a daughter, Patrice Marlene and husband Craig Light of Bentonville, Arkansas; five grandchildren: Olivia M. Cantrell, Tempe, Arizona, David William (Will) Cantrell, II, Dublin, California, Caleb T., Chloe E. and Caitlin G. Light of Bentonville, Arkansas.

Also surviving are his brothers and sisters: James (Billie Ann) Cantrell of Thomasville, Gene Cantrell of Taylorsville, Bill Cantrell of Cartersville, Betty Sue (Melvin) Scott of Taylorsville, Rufus (Kathy) Cantrell of Taylorsville, Raiford (Linda) Cantrell of Ellijay, Catherine (Alton) Hufstetler of Adairsville, Lamar (Linda) Cantrell of Taylorsville, Sherry Elaine (James) Dupree of Kingston, his brothers in law, Joe (Mary Ann) Free of Taylorsville and Jerry (Audrey) Free of Taylorsville. Also many nieces and nephews.


Funeral services will be held Sunday, January 6, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with eulogies, poems and music by his children, grandchildren and brothers and prayer by Pastor Bill Avery. Masonic Rites by John W. Akin Lodge # 537 F. & A.M..

Interment services will be held Monday January 7, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA with Military Honors.

Pallbearers will include: Tim Burns, Bob Allen, Daren Wright, Aaron Woods , Cary Hayes and Jimmy Moore.

Honorary pallbearers will include: Ronald Hicks, Gary Stokes, Shane Watson, David Howard and all Masonic brothers.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 until 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Gideon Society in memory of Mr. Cantrell.

The Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of (Mark) Marcus Elmer Cantrell.
