Mr. Roy James Yarbrough, Sr., age 78, of Rockmart passed away Friday, September 2, 2016 at his residence surrounded by his family.
He was born in Rockmart, GA on December 28, 1937 a son of the late Winifred Yarbrough and Frances Crabb Yarbrough. Mr. Yarbrough had lived all of his life in Rockmart where he was a member of the New Prospect Baptist Church and the Mens Sunday School Class. He had served as a Deacon since 1976 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Victory Baptist Church and presently at New Prospect Church. Mr. Yarbrough was a veteran of the United States Air Force; was a former employee of Rome Plow Company where he worked for twelve years and retired from Ford Motor Company where he worked for twenty years. He was a member of the Polk County Senior Choir and was a volunteer with the Polk County Food Pantry.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Roy James Yarbrough, Jr. and by two brothers: Clyde Yarbrough and Toby Yarbrough.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Knight Yarbrough of Rockmart to whom he was married on December 25, 1957; three daughters: Martha Baines (Randy), Rockmart, Karen Jones (Danny), Cedartown and Denise Portwood (Randall), Rockmart; seven grandchildren: Jane Waldrop (Bobby), Nicole Ellis (Daniel), Jessica Jones Zahler (Zach), Dana Rampey (R.J.), Aimee Portwood, James Portwood and Jamie Houston; four great grandchildren: Trudi Baines Floyd, Brystol Waldrop, Carter Waldrop and Olive Zahler; brother, Preston Yarbrough (Willie Sue), Rockmart; sisters in law, Sue Yarbrough and Bobbie Jean Yarbrough; a number of nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Michael Duncan.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 5, 2106 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Larry Davis and Rev. Jason Purser officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers will include: Bobby Waldrop, Michael Duncan, Tim Yarbrough, Teddy Yarbrough, Daniel Ellis, R.J. Rampey, Randy Baines, Randall Portwood and Danny Jones. Honorary pallbearers will include the Deacons and members of the Mens Sunday School Class of New Prospect Baptist Church and Lori Yarbrough.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial gifts be made to the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3923 Antioch Road, Cedartown, GA 30125.
The family will receive friends Monday from 11:00 am until the service hour at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home and on Sunday at the residence, 358 Knight Road Rockmart.
