Thelma Virginia Ambrose

Mrs. Thelma Virginia Ambrose, age 93, of Rockmart, GA passed away Saturday, August 29, 2015 following a period of declining health.

She was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on October 15, 1921 a daughter of the late B.F. Walker and Bessie Cochran Walker. Mrs. Ambrose had been a resident of Rockmart since 1971 moving here from Eastman, GA. She was a Registered Nurse having worked in New York and Panama City, FL before devoting her time to raising her daughter , spending time gardening, sewing and cooking. Mrs. Ambrose was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rockmart and was a life member of the Eastern Star, Grand Chapter of Crestview, Florida.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Mr. James L. Ambrose on January 14, 2002 ; by a great grandson, Liam Cole Gurley; by a sister, Mae Belle Regan and by two brothers: Bennie Walker and Lloyd Walker.

Survivors include her daughter, Virginia Gurley and her husband David of Rockmart; two grandchildren: Kate Beck and husband Major Bailyn Beck of Surprise, Arizona and William Gurley and wife Kristen of Greenwood, Indiana; three great grandchildren: Ethan and Grant Beck of Surprise, Arizona and Eliza Gurley of Greenwood, Indiana. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 31, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Greg Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Polk Memory Gardens.

Active and inactive Deacons of the First Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will include: Mike Estes, Steve Dean, Wayne Purser, David Howard , Mike Waters and Tim Bice.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made in memory of Mrs. Ambrose to the Music Department of the first Baptist Church of Rockmart.

The family will receive friends Monday morning from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home.
