Velma Hitchcock Jefferson

Mrs. Velma Inez Hitchcock Jefferson, affectionately known as Granny, age 89, of Rockmart, GA, passed away Saturday afternoon, May 18, 2024, at her residence.

Mrs. Jefferson was born in Paulding County, GA, on May 8, 1935, the daughter of the late Bruce Caswell Hitchcock and Edna Mae Nolen Hitchcock.  She had lived the greater part of her life in Rockmart and was an active member of County Line Baptist Church for many years.   Mrs. Jefferson worked for Ray Sewell Manufacturing, the Rockmart Nursing Home and retired at the age of 82 from the Food Service Director position at the Polk County Jail.

In her younger years, Mrs. Jefferson loved craft shows, crocheting and was an accomplished seamstress.  Her greatest passions in life were to follow the great commission.  Mrs. Jefferson was passionate about Missions, Vacation Bible School and Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes.  She taught Sunday School for many years and instilled many young children and teens to learn books of the Bible and to memorize Bible verses.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jefferson was preceded in death by the love of her life, James L. Jefferson on June 2, 2019, to whom she was married December 24, 1953, her daughter, Debra Jefferson Rogers, an infant son, Caswell Jefferson, and a brother, Dean Hitchcock.

Mrs. Jefferson is survived by her children, Vickie and Steve Thomas, Ricky and Cathy Jefferson, Myra and Steve Rogers; son-in-law, Kenneth Rogers; four grandchildren, Danyel, Eddie, Will and Selena.  Ten great-grandchildren and one nephew also survives.  Her children and grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Funeral services for Mrs. Jefferson will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel of Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Thomas and Rev. Kenny Teal officiating.  Interment will follow in County Line Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jefferson’s family will receive friends at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour.

Pallbearers will include Riley Miller, Logan Miller, Will Rogers, Noah Fontenot, Jayden Fontenot, Cole Thomas, Billy Hitchcock, and Daniel Teal.   Honorary pallbearers will include Eddie Thomas, Steve Rogers, and Rodger Fontenot.
