Mr. Walter E. "Buddy" Dundervill, Sr., age 84, of Rome, GA passed away Thursday, May 21, 2020.
Buddy was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 26, 1936 to Madeline McCay Dundervill and Robert F. Dundervill Sr. He graduated from Darlington School in 1953 and received a Bachelor of Textile Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1958. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and multiple scholastic honorary societies. After college, he served 2 years as a reserve rank Captain in the Army Corps of Engineers and later served in the Alabama National Guard. He began his career in the textile industry at Burlington Industries as a GA Tech co-op student in 1953. After graduating, he continued work at Burlington as an Industrial Engineer. In 1963, he began working for Trend Industries in Rome, GA as a Plant Manager. In 1967, he was transferred to Trends’ Los Angeles plant where he served as Vice President of California Operations for six years. In 1973, he and his family moved back to Rome where he worked as Trend’s Vice President of Manufacturing and later as Vice President of Employee Relations. After Trend dissolved operations in 1982, he began a new career as an Independent Insurance Agent and Vice President of Cooper, Brown, and Currie where worked until his retirement in 2003.
Throughout his life Buddy was very active in his church and in many civic organizations. He served as an Elder and Adult Bible Class Teacher of the Oak Hill Church of Christ for many years. He is a past president of the Boys and Girls Club of Rome, receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1991. He is a Past President and Past Director of the Rome Rotary Club, Junior Achievement of Rome and Floyd County, and the Coosa Valley Independent Insurance Agents Association. He is a past director of the Rome Chapter of the American Cancer Society, and the Rome Chapter of the American Red Cross. In addition, he served on advisory committees for several organizations including the Committee on Career Education for Rome City Schools. He was the leader of the Prince Club since 2018.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife and the mother of his children Jane Foster Dundervill on October 24, 1991; and three brothers: Jim, Jack and Bill Newton.
Survivors include his wife, Nora Rouse Dundervill, Rome to whom he was married on March 13, 1994; two daughters: Desiree Dundervill, Chattanooga and Shawna Carscaddon, Chattanooga; son, Walter E. (Dundy) Dundervill, Jr., Brooklyn, NY; three step children: Andi Beyer, Rome, Lee Rouse, St. Louis, MO and Christina Davidson, Rome; brother, Robert F. (Bob) Dundervill, Jr., Virginia Beach, VA; four grandchildren: Jacob Henley, Grace Henley Skaletsky, Logan Henley and Jillian Henley Updegraff; one great grandson, William Updegraff; and nine step grandchildren: Colleen Stewart, Brendan Beyer, Kerrie Beyer, Dylan Beyer, Tony Biggers, Charles Rouse, Rylee Rouse, Anna Davidson and Tess Davidson.
Graveside funeral and interment services will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at 2:00 pm in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Elder Steve Murdock officiating and the Honor Guard of Shanklin Attaway Post # 5 of the American Legion in charge of military rites. Social distancing rules are to be applied.
The Elders and Deacons of the Oak Hill Church of Christ will serve as active and honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to The Georgia Tech Foundation marked “in memory of Walter Earl “Buddy” Dundervill" and mailed to The Georgia Tech Alumni Association, 190 North Avenue, NW, Atlanta, GA 30313.
