William Joseph (Joe) Free

Dr. William Joseph (Joe) Free, age 79, of Taylorsville passed away Friday, July 25, 2014 at his residence.

He was born in Polk County, GA on August 31, 1934 a son of the late William M. Free and the late Lessie Dell Hayes Free. Dr. Free was a graduate of Rockmart High School class of 1952, a graduate of the University of Georgia and a graduate of the University of Missouri where he earned his PHD. Dr. Free was a member and treasurer of the Floyd Creek Baptist Church and a veteran of the United States Army. He retired in 1994 from TVA where he was an agricultural economists. He enjoyed NASCAR, traveling to Florida and dining out.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Free to whom he was married on March 12, 1998; two daughters: Delea Bowerfind and her husband Tucker of Alexandria, VA; Anne Free of Corinth, MS; two step-daughters: Wanda Gettys and her husband Bobby of Mooresville NC; Ginger Nix of Athens, GA; one sister, Patricia Cantrell of Rockmart; one brother, Jerry Free and wife Audrey of Taylorsville; six grandchildren, and four step-grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 27, 2014 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home with Dr. Albert Cox and Rev. Tucker Bowerfind officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include: Wayne Leatherwood, Lee Roy Shepherd, Freddie Lewis, Barry Murdock, Carlos Valdes and Keith Ayers. Honorary pallbearers will include the members of the 1952 class of Rockmart High School.

The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Floyd Creek Baptist Church, Heyman Hospice Care or the charity of your choice in memory of Dr. Free.
