Mr. Alvis P. Miller Jr., age 84, of Rockmart, GA, passed away peacefully in a Rome medical center on Sunday, November 16, 2014.

Born in Rome, GA, on March 31, 1930, he was the firstborn child of the marriage of Alvis P. Miller Sr. and Edna Fowler Miller. He was educated in the Rome City School System, graduating from Boy's High class of 1947 where he served as President of the High Y Club.

Mr. Miller then attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville, TN. It was during this time in his life that he felt the call to the ministry. While he preached on Sundays in Borden Springs, AL, he worked in Rome at the Montgomery Ward Department Store, and later, at J. C. Penny Company, where he would meet the love of his life, Doris Beard.

After their marriage on June 15, 1952, Alvis and Doris Miller made their home in Rome, GA, where Alvis served the Fifth Avenue Church of Christ and later the Lindale Church of Christ. In 1954, Alvis and Doris moved to Rockmart, where he served the Rockmart Church of Christ for five years, and then, they moved to Douglasville, where he served the church for two years. In 1960, the family returned to Rockmart where he served the Rockmart congregation again for 14 years.

A very important part of his ministry was his daily radio program, "The Radio Bible Class," which aired on WPLK. During this time in his life, in addition to his church work, he was involved with the American Red Cross Community Blood Drive. He served as Red Cross chairman for many years, was a member of the Rockmart Ministerial Association, a volunteer with the Fish Creek Volunteer Fire Department, an EMT with the Rockmart Aragon Hospital Ambulance Service, and a member of the Rockmart Kiwanis Club.

In 1974, he returned to Rome where he served the West Rome Church of Christ and the Oak Hill Church of Christ for 21 years. After his retirement from full-time ministry in 1995, he returned to the Rockmart Church of Christ and served as an associate minister and Elder.

On October 1, 1981, the Alvis Miller & Son Funeral Home opened to serve the community of Rockmart and the surrounding area. This was another opportunity for him and his family to continue a legacy of service, which is now in its 34th year of service.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Doris B. Miller, Rockmart; four children: Stephen A. Miller and wife Claudene, Rockmart, Philip J. Miller and wife Terry, Silver Creek, Ruth Miller Fox and husband Jeff, Nashville, TN and Mary Miller Shamblin and husband, John, Cumming; eleven grandchildren: Jennifer Miller Mobbs (Adam), Michelle Miller Starling (B.J.), Valerie Miller Hopper (Nicholas), Amber Cason Estes (Matt), Jacob Fox (Melanie), Jessie Fox Herren (David), Chris Miller (Kristen), Jillian Shamblin Anderson (Will), Jenna Fox Tomberlin (Clark), Jackson Shamblin and Chet Miller; thirteen great grandchildren: Riley, Turner, Hunter, Chance, Millie, Marcy, Griffin, Bailey, Kinley, Andrew, Thomas, Emerson and Hudson; sister, Joy Miller Stewart and husband Reuben, Birmingham, AL; brother, Vernon Miller and wife Elaine, Rockmart; sister-in-law, Joyce Beard Burns and husband Clifford, Marietta and brother-in-law Fred Beard and wife Wynema, Gainesville, FL; a number of nieces and nephews also survive.
